Which AI model is right for your Mac?

Understand model capabilities, memory, storage and context before choosing a local AI setup for your Mac.

The best model for your Mac is one that can do the job well at a speed you are happy to use. A larger download is only one part of that decision.

Naldar provides the workspace. The selected AI model supplies particular abilities, and your hardware determines how comfortably it can run. Start with the task you care about, then test a compatible model against it.

Three questions to ask first

  • What do I want it to do: chat, interpret an image, create an image or carry out an agent task?
  • Does my Mac have enough available memory and storage for that model and workflow?
  • Can I test a small example before committing to a much larger setup?

Choose the right kind of model

A text model answers in words. A vision-capable model can accept images as part of its input. An image-generation model produces images. These capabilities need compatible support in the app and engine you are using.

Being able to describe a photograph does not automatically mean a model can generate one. The Ollama vision documentation describes image input; Studio has its own supported image-generation models.

Agent work also asks more of a model than a short conversation. Following instructions, using tools correctly and keeping track of a task are capabilities worth testing directly.

Separate memory from storage

Storage is where model files live. Memory is the working space used while they run. An external SSD gives you more room for downloads and creations, but it does not add RAM or unified memory to your Mac.

On Apple silicon, the system and graphics processing share unified memory. macOS, other applications and the generation workload need room too. A model’s download size is not a complete estimate of the memory required to use it.

Check the requirements for the exact model and supported workflow. Names can describe different model sizes and compressed variants; models with similar-looking names may have different capabilities or memory needs.

Remember the conversation window

The context window is how much information a model can work with in a request. Earlier conversation, instructions, reference material and tool results can all take space.

A longer window can be useful, but increasing it also requires more memory. Ollama’s context-length guide explains that trade-off. A large advertised maximum does not mean every Mac can use it comfortably with every model.

Keep your first comparison focused. A short request with the relevant information is easier to test than a huge conversation mixed with unrelated documents.

Use the same small test

Choose an example from your own work and try it with each compatible model you are considering. For a writing task, provide a few facts and ask for a short draft. For an agent, begin with a limited task that you can inspect without publishing or sending anything.

A SIMPLE COMPARISON PROMPT

Using only the notes below, write a short explanation for a new customer. Keep all prices and dates exactly as provided. Identify missing information instead of guessing. Then give me a three-point checklist for reviewing the draft.

Compare accuracy, instruction-following, natural language and response time. Include the first model-load delay in your setup expectations, while also checking how later requests behave.

Leave room for your Mac to work

Close unnecessary heavy applications during a first test and avoid launching several demanding model jobs together. Watch how the whole Mac responds, rather than judging only how quickly the first words appear.

Where supported, deeper thinking settings can take longer to produce an answer. Choose them for tasks where the extra time is useful. A model still needs the right capabilities, clear instructions and reliable tools.

Review model licences for your intended use, particularly commercial work. Keep a smaller model that works well before deciding whether a larger one gives you enough improvement to justify its demands. For a practical next step, try giving your AI one clear job.
